The special education process, State/Federal special education laws/regulations, and Response to Intervention
Artifact: The Special Education Process Podcast

Reflection: For this competency, I decided to generate a new artifact- a Podcast. I had previously made a Podcast for a former class, and feel that it really captures the essence of multimodality. In the Podcast, I talk about the Special Education process for both primary and secondary school, which of course covers RTI for grades K-4. I also discuss the referral and the evaluation process. I feel like creating a Podcast really helped me master my understanding of this competency. I think it is one thing to be able to write about a concept, but a completely other one to be able to talk about it and explain it to someone else--which is what I hope to accomplish through my Podcast. For me to successfully complete this artifact, I had to recap on several of the modules to make sure I was fluent in the special education process for both primary and secondary school, and then decompress this information into an easy-to-follow "conversation" via audio recording. Creating this artifact really helped me make the connection from the pre-referral stage to the referral and evaluation stage of the special education process. As a high school Spanish teacher, I will not be involved with RTI. But, I very well might be involved with the secondary school special education process. I think a large part for feeling nervous about working with students with disabilities is the unknown. However, now I am am much more clear on exactly what MY role will be in the special education process as a secondary school teacher.

I have also included some links that provide further information for this competency. These cover the history of Special Education, and an informative video about IDEA. Lastly, I include the link to the NYS Department of Education's page on laws and regulations related to special education and students with disabilities for more information on state special education laws.
